Awana Grand Prix

Parker goes to Cubbies every Sunday which is part of Awana at the Baptist church. It is such a wonderful program. He has so much fun and has learned so much in such a short time. They have weekly memory verses and it amazes me how much scripture he can recite! (We have already had to have the talk about where people go when they die if they don't go to heaven). This past weekend they had the "Grand Prix" race. The cars started out as wood blocks and the children/parents carve and design them and then they have a very technical race...the cars even had to be inspected and weighed in and were kept overnight so no modifications could be made! Unfortunately, Parker's car wasn't too fast this year. Chad got sick and then had to work over time so his time for the car was very limited. He himself raced the cars as a child so he was extra excited for Parker to do this. Parker had a lot of fun but it nearly broke my heart when he was "eliminated" and his friends were still racing...he looked at me and said, "Mommy, why don't I get to have a turn anymore? Why are my friends still racing their cars?" Now don't get me wrong, I realize this is not a major, life-altering moment, but it made me sad to see the disappointment in his eyes. I know this is just the tip of the ice burg! There is, however, a little humor to this b/c he did get a trophy for design (3rd place) and so he firmly believes he won! I told him many times that his car was actually not the fastest and that Krista won for having the fastest car (after all they don't need to learn that they always win...)...it didn't work...the trophy was all he needed and in his heart he insists that he did win!

All the kids got these great hats, a ribbon, a badge, and pins to wear on their cubbie vests. Commander Pam was nice enough to give Cambell a hat too!

Cambell was beyond tired by the end of this nearly 3 hour event...when we got in the car, he put his hat on his head and this is the way I found him within 3 minutes!

Lee,
I am so dumb! The whole time you were describing this to me Friday, I thought it was a car that Parker would SIT in and ride really fast down a hill. I tried telling Carter about it and he had to correct me, but for a day or two, I was waiting to see pictures of Parker flying down a hill in his little box car!!!
